Peter Appeldoorn Mead died unexpectedly in Grenada, West Indies on Jan. 28 at the age of 85.

The son of the late Sumner Adelbert Mead and Ruth Appeldoorn Mead, Peter grew up in Barrington, Ill., and was a longtime resident of Back Bay in Boston and Edgartown. Peter summered on the Vineyard all of his life, where he was a member of the Edgartown Yacht Club and Edgartown Reading Room. He was a World War II veteran and was stationed aboard a Landing Ship, Tank that participated in the Normandy invasion. When Peter was first out of college he worked in the family coffee business, and was later in charge of the investment department at the real estate firm Hunneman & Company. As a broker, Peter was involved in the first condominium conversion in the Back Bay. He also served as a member of the Back Bay architectural commission for a number of years. He enjoyed traveling to his residence in Naples, Fla., but his favorite vacation destination was Grenada, West Indies.

He is survived by his loving wife Sara (Duncan); his two daughters Tenney Cover and her husband McLane Cover, Cary White and her husband Henry White; four grandchildren; and his brothers, Sumner and John.

Plans for a memorial service are pending. Internment will be in Edgartown. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Animal Rescue League of Boston.
