Henry Corey, a well-known Vineyard attorney and Island native who specialized in title and estate work and helped to found the Dukes County Savings Bank 55 years ago, died Feb. 27 at the Royal Nursing Center in Falmouth. He was 88 and was a resident of Oak Bluffs and Falmouth.

He was the husband of Patricia (Kiley) Corey for 57 years. Born in Oak Bluffs, he was the son of Frank and Emma (Janovic) Corey.

Mr. Corey was a veteran of the United States Army, having served as a medic assigned to the 47th Field Hospital during World War II. He was in Normandy, France in 1944 as well as taking part in the Battle of the Bulge. He was honorably discharged in 1945.

He graduated with a bachelor of arts degree from Columbia University in 1943. He then graduated from Fordham Law School in 1949, being admitted to the Massachusetts Bar in the same year. He conducted a private practice of law on the Vineyard for more than 50 years.

Mr. Corey and the late John W. Osborne cofounded the Dukes County Savings Bank on April 15, 1955, now the Martha’s Vineyard Savings Bank and the Bank of Woods Hole, where he was a trustee and officer until his death.

A lifelong member of the VFW, DAV and also the American Legion, he was dedicated to the recognition of service people in the local community.

An avid jogger, Mr. Corey won several Martha’s Vineyard road races well into his late seventies. While living in Falmouth the last five years, he enjoyed volunteering at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. He also liked to take long walks around Falmouth Harbor with his family.

Besides his wife, survivors include his son, Sean J. Corey of Falmouth, his wife, Kristin, and grandchildren, Owen, Alexandra and Aidan. Also, a daughter Kathleen Lynch of Bethpage, N.Y., her husband, William, and grandchildren, Marisol, Emma and Liam.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial mass at St. Patrick’s Church in Falmouth on Friday, March 5 at 10 a.m. Interment will follow with military honors at 1 p.m. in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Oak Bluffs.
