Phyllis Garland, 82, a lifelong resident of Oak Bluffs, died on Feb. 12 at Windemere Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where she had been a resident for the past 16 years.

She was born Jan. 13, 1928, in Oak Bluffs and was a graduate of Oak Bluffs High School. After attending Bates College and Bridgewater State College where she majored in history, Phyllis worked in the family’s Red and White Grocery on Circuit avenue. Her father, George Stanley Garland and mother, Agnes Evans Garland, owned the popular market for many years. Phyllis had one sister, Ruth, who died in 1968.

She was a member of Trinity Methodist Church and served as the secretary of the Women’s Society. She also belonged to the Rebeccas and Eastern Star organizations. She enjoyed knitting, watching football on television, reading, gardening and cards. During her time at Windemere, Phyllis especially enjoyed the many animal visitors, music programs, parties and her favorite activity — bingo. She will be missed by many near and far.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, Feb. 18 at 11 a.m. in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Oak Bluffs with the Rev. Alden Besse officiating.
