Donald M. Fisher of West Tisbury died peacefully on Sunday, April 17 at Massachusetts General Hospital with family present. He was 82.

Donald was born May 14, 1928, in Needham to Fred S. and Minnie Belle Fisher. The family summered at Lambert’s Cove, and Don and his brother, Fred Jr., chose as young men to make Martha’s Vineyard their permanent home.

On Sept. 10, 1948, Don married Christine (Tina) Pachico of Vineyard Haven. They settled in West Tisbury, where Don built their home on State Road. A longtime employee of New England Telephone, Don eventually retired to pursue his love of gardening, fishing and shellfishing.

Devoted to his town, Don in his earlier years served a term as a selectman in West Tisbury. He was a stalwart supporter and member of the Lambert’s Cove Methodist Church, and later of the Lambert’s Cove Christian Church. He was a loving husband and father, as well as a steadfast and loyal friend to all who knew him.

Don is survived by Tina, his wife of 62 years; his son Don Jr. and his wife Debbie of Butte, Mont.; his son Peter and his wife Dorothy of West Tisbury; his daughter Frances and her husband Jerry of the Villages, Fla.; and his daughter Martha and her husband Steve of Norton.

Also surviving are Don’s grandchildren, Becky, Scott and Don 3rd; his step-grandchildren, Darcy, Dave, Debbie and Ron; and his great-granddaughter, Madeline.

He was predeceased by his brother and great friend, Fred Fisher Jr.

There will be a graveside service on Saturday, April 23 at 1 p.m. at the Lambert’s Cove Cemetery with the Rev. George Eli presiding.
