Robert Specht died Sunday, Jan. 6 in Falmouth at the end of a rich and full life. He was 90.

Two of his four children and one of his eight grandchildren were there at the time, representatives of the strong and loving family who were all there in spirit, and whom he and Nancy, his wife of 65 years, had raised together.

Born Jan. 5, 1923, Bob was the third and only surviving child of his parents’ four children. He chose his career at an early age, and after high school attended college at Princeton University and medical school at Columbia. His undergraduate and graduate school careers were accelerated by the Second World War, and he became a physician at the age of 25. After serving briefly as a stateside Army surgeon and finishing his training in Massachusetts, he settled with his family in Summit, N.J. There he became a vital member of the Summit Medical Group and the staff of Overlook Hospital, where for a time he was also president of the medical staff. He took great pride in his profession, and was known for his compassion, skill and dedication.

Bob’s many friends were drawn by his warm and generous nature. Whether on the beach at Martha’s Vineyard, the tennis court wherever he could find one, or at a social gathering, he was eager to engage the people he met, and continued to forge strong and lasting friendships throughout his life.

The foundation of Bob’s life was his family. His anchor, guide and partner throughout most of his life was his wife, Nancy. Together they raised four children and watched their family grow over the years through marriages and the birth of eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. The family has remained close despite their geographic distance from Bob and one another.

Bob’s expansive sense of family brought others close as well. From his nephews and nieces, to his adopted daughter and her husband, to his Belgian foreign exchange student, and to the occasional needs of friends of his own children, he and Nancy offered the consistent caring and support that defined his life.
