Zuri Brown has a ring in her sights. Maria Thibodeau

The Flying Horses carousel opened its 143rd season on Saturday, March 31. Just as they have for more than a century, hundreds of kids and parents flocked to the carousel to wait in line, choose a horse, and reach for the coveted brass ring that allows for an extra ride free of charge.

Adults looked on as their children whizzed by, the 1923 Wurlitzer Band Organ playing its familiar tune.

Addie Phillips is the 5th generation of our family to ride the horses! Catch the ring, Addie!

We vacationed on the Vineyard with our son throughout his childhood. One of his greatest treats was to ride the Carousel horses and catch the brass ring. He is now in his mid 30’s with two children of his own. Just this past weekend we were reminiscing about Vineyard vacations and he said he looks forward to bringing his children to the Vineyard so they too can ride the Carousel. He has some wonderfully special memories and soon it will be time for him to watch his little ones catch the brass ring, too.

I am the fifth generation in my family to ride the Carousel. My son was next and then we'll get his two beautiful daughters on for a ride. The Carousel is the quintessential MV experience, at least on rainy days! May the Carousel twirl forever.
