Blue sky frames smoke and water spray. Alison Shaw

Thursday, March 3, 2022

Island fire departments were on the scene Thursday morning responding to a three-alarm fire at the Ocean View restaurant in Oak Bluffs. The call went out just after 10 a.m. Thursday for the fire at 16 Chapman avenue. Heavy smoke filled the air and was visible across the harbor. Flames could be seen shooting from the roof of the restaurant.

Unless I'm mistaken, which is quite possible, this is the second time the Ocean View was destroyed by fire in freezing winter weather. I remember a larger Ocean View building. Did it include a hotel? The MV Lions Club used to meet in its restaurant. I'm sure the Gazette morgue has details of the first fire.

You are correct Toby. My grandparents owned the property, which did indeed include a hotel, when it first burned down in 1965. https://vineyardgazette.com/news/1965/01/15/ocean-view-hotel-destroyed-fire-night

Our first response was “thank God no one lost their lives”, but this is a loss for our community. Ocean View not only provide a moderately priced place to eat provided a place, but a place to gather as a community, see familiar faces and friends, and a place of employment to provide for individuals and their families. Our hearts go out to the Ocean View team for all that it has meant to many. We always felt welcomed, and cared for by the whole staff.

One of our all time favorite family places to gather for so many years. So sorry for Mike and his team. The Island has lost a true landmark.

Many many thanks to all the firemen for saving our house. We are in Costa Rica and we’re called by a neighbor before the fire department arrived. When the new Ocean View is ready we will buy beers for all the fire department personnel. Thanks so much

This is so heartbreaking. We have always been big fans of the Ocean View and go often. It is obvious from all the posts on social media that the Ocean View and all who worked there mean a lot to the community. Many of us have special memories. We suffer as a community when things like this happen but hopefully they will rebuild and be back once again.

So sorry for the owners loss! We will remember the site for we celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary at the restaurant in 2018! Our photos will be more precious as we view them and remember our anniversary as well as the countless times we enjoyed meals in the restaurant and ordered takeout entrées. We hope issues work out. An Island favorite site will be missed. Blessings on all individuals who share this tremendous loss.
