It's a sign of the season, and a tasty one, too.

Martha's Vineyard received an influx of freshwater trout this week when officials from the state Division of Fisheries and Wildlife traveled to the Island  to unload truckloads of brown, rainbow, brook anda small number of tiger trout in Island ponds. The fish were delivered on Thursday to Duarte’s Pond, Uncle Seth’s Pond and Old Mill Pond in West Tisbury and Upper Lagoon Pond, which is shared by the towns of Oak Bluffs and Tisbury.

Trout are distributed free to Island ponds several time each year at no cost. The program is underwritten by the state sale of fishing licenses and permits and taxes collected for the sale of tackle.

Those who wish to try their luck in the ponds must obtain a freshwater fishing permit.
