Allen Farm hosted the No Nukes festival in 1978. Peter Simon

Wednesday, November 21, 2018

Beginning in the 1960s, Peter Simon's photographic career included political rallies and protests, the 60s hippie era, rock and roll portraits, Jamaica and its reggae stars, and his Island home and inhabitants which he documented for five decades.

Peter began working for the Gazette in 1969, and over the next five decades contributed thousands of pictures to the weekly newspaper. He never tired of the thrill of having his picture on the front page or editorial page. He was a photojournalist first, and his broad record of work included all the traditional Vineyard events, from the Chilmark Road Race to annual town meetings.

Can't believe that Pete is gone. He accomplished a great deal in his lifetime. He made it through many difficult times and came out the stronger and better person. He will be so greatly missed. Sending our love to Ronni and Willy and all who loved Peter.

His towering genius, talent and commitment to his community can and will never be matched in our life-time. Long live the legacy he left behind–the most beautiful images and memories of the place he loved and cherished. RIP Brother Peter, ONE LIOVE

We were of the same age. My life is full and busy, filled with love and continued challenges that have not faded but that give me opportunities to continue to be relevant. In thus I am supremely blessed. Perer’s death is a symbol for me of how important it is fir each of us to live in this moment..,whether we are 7 or 70. Our lives are far mire fragike than most of us would like to admit. God promises us only tge breath we are breathing now...not one second later. And it us all a magnificent gift. I suspect Peter Simon knew this well. Thank you Dear Lord for this sigular man and the pleasures he gave us all!

Peter has been such such an amazing window into history for all of us, yet he had such a personal touch in our lives. My son and brother each get a signed calendar under each Christmas tree, and a visit to the shop always means a chat with he or Ronni. I'll always smile at memories of his days as DJ at the Hot Tin Roof. He has left all of us sad, but with wonderful gifts to remember him always.

I am in shock here in Astana, Kazakhstan. I have written on a post it note on my wall “Call Peter/order calendars”. Has been a tradition for forever that I would get my calendars for Christmas for new year (1 for me and 1 for my twin sister Susan Steel, inscribed by Peter). He was my September 3, 2005 MV wedding photographer, capturing the most exquisite Edgartown setting/Harbor View and lighthouse photographs. Len Vermillion and I were fortunate to have such memories. Vacationing every year in Vineyard Haven, his gallery was always a welcome stop to catch-up on what corner of the world I was working-living. Another Vineyarder gone too soon. God speed, Peter. You will be terribly missed by many.

Went to college with Peter (BU), sharing photography classes at SPC. He'd moved on to shooting Nikon then. But we both had our own visions for what Prof Smith assigned us, pushing our ideas. He was good then, and he got better.

My condolences to the entire Simon family. Peter will be truly missed. I loved to visit him and Ronni at the gallery and talk, have cheese and wine and purchase what could never be enough sensational art and photographs. I am so thrilled to have known him and considered myself a friend. I'll never forget one of the greatest nights of my life on the Vineyard, when I got to meet my all time favorite female singer and artist Carly a few years ago at the book signing. It was a beautiful warm day for December. I spent the whole day there and somehow was lucky enough to be the first person in line. It was so inspirational I had to hang around to take more in before I took the ferry back to Rhode island. I remember going over to the Gallery which was open to see my friend, and Peter immediately let me view everything as I always loved to, and he generously offered me some wine and cheese. I was lucky enough to head back over with him, talking, back to the book store. Peter and Carly will always be among the most special representations of the Vineyard to me.

I never met Peter, but I admired his work immensely. I had hoped to run into him on a trip to the Vineyard around 1980, but it was not to be. While revisiting his superb photography I was shocked to learn of his passing back in 2018. Such a loss. RIP Peter, your legend spread far beyond the island.
