Jennifer outside her Chilmark studio. Jeanna Shepard

Thursday, August 23, 2018

Jennifer Joanou began her career as a fashion designer, then moved into photography. Her medium now is visual journaling, an artistic tunneling that starts with writing and then lets the words light the way to her unconscious. Each page of a completed journal is another chapter in her mind, captured at a particular moment through the layering of paint and images in a process as precise as it is free form.

I have had the privilege of following Jennifer’s exciting, visually beautiful and intellectually provocative work. She is that rare artist who actually reveals her soul while creating a world of heart stopping beauty.

Her journey from journals to her current works off the page, is nothing short of inspiring! I don't know what her process is but the pieces are rich and layered and always crack my mind open a bit. I love her work!!
