Butter stained tables line the dock of Menemsha harbor where on summer evenings fresh lobsters are eaten off paper plates as the sun sets on another Vineyard day. Finger licking is required, bibs are optional.
Lobsters are a celebration says Larsen’s Fish Market owner Betsy Larsen.
For Menemsha Fish Market owner Stanley Larsen, the harbor is a natural wonderland.
“I was watching a loon this morning eating a clam right off the dock,” Mr. Larsen said on Monday afternoon in Menemsha as a light snow began to fall. “I had to stop and watch it for a few minutes. It was amazing. There are all kinds of ducks in the harbor now. I was just looking out there and trying to count them. Pretty soon the otters will come through and sit on the docks, eating lobsters.”
On Dutcher Dock: Menemsha's Seismic Shift: A Fish Market Faces
Sale
By JESSIE ROYCE HILL
In a place where generations of fishermen have hawked their seafood,
fathers and sons yearly descend to cast lines off the jetty and summer
crowds have applauded the glow of a setting sun, the news is out: Stand
by for the sale of a landmark Island fish market.
After six years on the dock, owners Stanley and Lanette Larsen are selling the Menemsha Fish Market. The couple posted the sale notice on Craigslist Dec. 27 with Mr. Larsen as the contact person, although the owners did not advertise an asking price.
“Profitable fish market for sale in the beautiful fishing village of Menemsha,” the advertisement reads. “Surrounded by fishing docks and close to Menemsha beach. Open year round. Serious inquiries only.”
