Elderly Driver Smashes Into Coffee Shop

An 86-year-old Pennsylvania man parking his car along Circuit avenue in Oak Bluffs drove into the front of Mocha Mott’s coffee shop just before 3 p.m. on Monday. Although no one was seriously injured, the crash shattered the coffee shop’s plate glass window and clogged traffic for approximately 30 minutes.

Herring Creek Speeding Crash Leads to Hospital

A Maine resident was seriously injured Saturday after he drove his vehicle off Herring Creek Road at high speed and flipped twice before coming to rest in a field near South Beach.

Dustin Gilbert, 22, of Lewiston, Me., was transported by ambulance to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital to be treated for head and neck injuries. Edgartown police Sgt. Kenneth Johnson said Mr. Gilbert will be charged with negligent operation, speeding and a marked lanes violation.

A taxi owned by Adam Cab crashed into a utility pole on Lagoon Pond Road across from the Tisbury post office early Thursday morning, snarling traffic at the Five Corners intersection for several hours on one of the busiest days of the year. Bus Accident: None Hurt

West Tisbury police Tuesday responded to an accident involving a Vineyard Transit Authority bus and a motor vehicle at the intersection of State and West Tisbury-Edgartown Roads.

The VTA bus, operated by Jerome Rogers of Oak Bluffs, was heading down the hill north of Alley’s General Store on State Road with five passengers aboard. Kaitlin Taub, of Delmar, N.Y., was turning left at the intersection of Edgartown and State Roads at Brandy Brow, with one passenger in her 2000 Honda Accord.

An Edgartown woman was issued a citation following a two-vehicle collision on Christmas day at the intersection of Old County and State Roads in West Tisbury.

Police said the accident caused major front end damage to both vehicles but no injuries to either driver.

Fourth of July Crash Claims One Life; Another Remains Critically Injured

A 21-year-old New Hampshire woman has died and a 26-year-old New Hampshire man remained in critical condition in a Boston hospital Monday afternoon following a Fourth of July car accident on the Vineyard last week that left five people injured, three critically. A stunned family member who was at the scene but not involved in the accident described the tragedy to the Gazette, noting that they had come to the Island every summer.

Two Crash Victims Remain in Hospital

More than a week after a two-car accident on the Fourth of July that proved fatal, two people involved in the accident remain in Boston hospitals.

Seth Jones, 26, of Dummer, N.H., was listed in serious condition at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston on Thursday, a hospital spokesman said. His mother, Margaret Jones, 51, was listed in good condition.

On Saturday, Mr. Jones’ girlfriend, Heather L. Laflamme, 21, died at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston after she was critically injured in the car accident on Barnes Road.

Life-Saving Fisherman Honored Following Car Crash at Big Bridge

Robert (Hawkeye) Jacobs, 64, of Oak Bluffs received a hero’s greeting from a few of his friends at the Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby on Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Jacobs was honored for saving the life of a 22-year-old woman who was driving a car that went off the Big Bridge in Oak Bluffs in the wee hours of Friday morning.

Mr. Jacobs was presented with his first Vineyard cell phone at derby headquarters, on the Edgartown waterfront as he posed for pictures with representatives from the derby, state police and Edgartown police.
