The land and buildings of the School of Creative Arts on the West Chop Road in Vineyard Haven have been sold by Miss Kathleen Hinni to Mrs. Hazel F. Schwarts, Mr. and Mrs. James E. Angell and Mr. and Mrs. Kelvin Kennedy. All are owners of real estate either adjoining the school property or located nearby.
The sale was made by Cronig’s Real Estate. The property consists of seven acres of wooded land, with 600 feet of beach, which has been divided equally among the three purchases.
Camp Winnecunnet, the Y.W.C.A. camp on West Chop road, Vineyard Haven, has been sold this week to Miss Kathleen Hinni, representing the School of Creative Arts which she has conducted in the town for the past several years. The sale, as yet uncompleted, was made through the office of Mrs. O. B. Weeks, formerly Miss Mary Nunes, of Oak Bluffs.
Students and faculty of the former summer School of Creative Arts on West Chop are having a reunion on the Vineyard, from August 20 to 22. Now in their 40s, 50s and 60s, participants will visit the school sites and reminisce about their summers spent at the school on the Island. They will also teach and participate in arts classes and perform for and with each other.
This new summer resort located at West Chop is very beautifully situated on the shores of Vineyard Haven harbor and Vineyard sound, but a few minutes ride from the village of Vineyard Haven. The gentlemen who have undertaken this new enterprise are men of ample means and business ability; they are spending a large amount of money for the development of the property question. Among the improvements already made might be mentioned the building of a large and substantial wharf into the waters of Vineyard Sound.
Capt. William Lewis has sold to a syndicate of Boston gentlemen all the land, wharf property, &c., of the West Point Land Co., on West Chop, Martha’s Vineyard. This land was purchased by Capt. Lewis some 12 or 15 years ago and improvements made to the extent of several thousand dollars. Avenues were laid out, a wharf was built and the land was plotted for cottage lots, but the boom at Cottage City at that time diverted attention from this fine locality. The purchasers are heavy men and include William Minot, Stephen Weld and Francis Peabody.
The submarine cable which is henceforth to connect us with the world, was safely and expeditiously put down on Wednesday forenoon last, between the hours of ten and twelve. It arrived at Holmes’ Hole on Tuesday. Before the cable had reached the Vineyard shore, and when mid way the Sound, communication was had with Boston. Communication was also had with the same place after the cable reached this side, thus proving it to be all right. While the cable was being laid quite a lively scene was presented off the West Chop, where numberless boats were passing to and fro.
Once located on Beach Street in Vineyard Haven where the Stop & Shop now stands, the Great House served for years as a tavern before being moved to its present location on West Chop.
The West Chop home overlooking Vineyard Haven Harbor sold for for $7.2 million. The buyer is David Grain, a private equity manager and 1980 graduate of the Martha's Vineyard Regional High School.
