Clarification

In a story in last week’s Gazette about the invasion of tunicates in Island ponds, Mary Carman of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution blamed the importing of shellfish from the Sea of Japan for the introduction of the animal. She said further this week that the restaurant industry is responsible.

Correction

A story about The Birthday Club in the Tuesday Gazette incorrectly reported that the Island Food Pantry received government funds. The pantry does purchase more food than is donated, but without any government assistance.

Corrections

A town column in Friday’s Gazette characterized Peter and Cora Weiss as friends of the father of President Obama in the early 1960s. Mrs. Weiss was the executive director of the African American Students Foundation from 1959-63 which brought students from East Africa to the U.S. The President’s father, Barack Obama, came to the University of Hawaii independently, though the foundation awarded him three modest grants to help him buy books, pay for his tuition and personal needs.

Correction

A story in the Tuesday Gazette about an event with the two Island bookstores incorrectly named the owner of Edgartown Books. The owners are David and Ann LeBreton; the manager is Susan Mercier. The Gazette regrets the error.
