Well, last weekend a pickup team of baseball players was busy playing ball on the school ball field that had patches of snow in the infield. This weekend it was a different story as it was buried under 12 inches of snow. We had a classic blizzard last Friday and Saturday.

This is sadly a colder winter than last year so far; perhaps the worst is behind us. The busiest place in town on Sundays continues to be Up-Island Automotive, where gasoline is on sale. Don’t forget to attend Cynthia Riggs’s 26th annual Groundhog Day party tomorrow from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Cleaveland House on Edgartown Road.

It is quiet in town and traffic was nearly nonexistent Sunday afternoon as most folks were watching the Patriots demolish the Houston Texans at Foxboro. Go Patriots this Sunday!

It turned cold right after Christmas, rained hard last Saturday and then turned to wet snow that promptly froze like a rock. Then it warmed up a bit to assist us in removing the large amount of ice from around our houses and driveways. It is expected to turn colder this weekend. Dick Knabel was about to host a cocktail party last Saturday but needed to buy a bag of ice, so he hurried to the nearest ice machine. He was heard to remark that there sure was enough of it around his house but it was not in cubes. The clerk at the store had to first break the ice, as a result of recent storm, before opening the machine to hand him his bag of ice.
