It sure has been quiet in town and today is the start of a long holiday weekend, which should bring a lot of winter guests if the weather is half-way decent. Vacation week for our schools starts next Friday and many of you will be taking a winter break off-Island.

We have had a tough January this year with two snowstorms. Last week’s storm dumped eight inches of the white stuff and the temperature has been below normal.

Well, this is the start of a long holiday weekend as Monday is Martin Luther King Day and all municipal buildings, including the post office, will be closed. Last weekend’s weather was wet and windy with the temperature in the upper 50s. Gale force winds were so strong that all afternoon and evening trips by the SSA had to be cancelled. We are just two short months away from the start of spring. Our son Sam remarked the other day that it is so quiet around town that the lack of traffic gives the appearance that it has been evacuated!

Well, December has gone into the record books as one of the warmest ever recorded. The only snow was a few scattered flurries on two occasions. Last year this time we were dealing with several inches of snow that had stacked up and froze solid. We don’t have to wait for the January thaw as there isn’t any frost in the ground. The weather to begin the New Year was cold.
