Monday is Memorial Day and there will be a parade and traditional observances in Vineyard Haven. All town buildings and the post office will be closed. The swans and baby cygnets on the Mill Pond surely make it feel like summer is on its way. The VTA bus schedule is now providing expanded coverage on the weekend evenings. The late bus to Aquinnah departs from the Grange Hall at 11:38 p.m. The everyday schedule goes into effect on June 23.

Well, the weather was mild and the sun came out Saturday afternoon and it turned out to be a decent weekend. Lawn mowers could be heard buzzing around town cutting lawns. The cherry trees in Harriet Bernstein’s front lawn were ablaze with color and so was the one on Music street

Well, the orioles (birds, that is) have returned to town. The late Emma Whiting had records to prove that they always return by the May 12. Anna Alley spotted one at our feeder yesterday morning. Bird watchers will be keeping a keen eye out all weekend.

The spring flowers are in bloom most everywhere and Wednesday was the first of May bringing baskets hung on doors and Maypole celebrations and dances announcing the arrival of spring officially sending old Jack Frost on vacation. The baseball field hosted a youth baseball game and the tennis courts were busy. Short sleeve shirts was the clothing of choice over the weekend.

Spring flowers and trees are finally in bloom. The baseball field on Sunday hosted a youth baseball game and the tennis courts were also busy. Paul Cook’s front lawn on Music street is a sea of tiny blue flower’s that Ann Nelson says are called glory of the snow.

Today begins a long holiday weekend in the commonwealth. Monday is Patriots Day and the 117th running of the Boston marathon. Town offices will be closed.

People are beginning the task of cleaning up the yard after the long winter, throwing away the Christmas tree that is beginning to turn rust color out in the back yard, and raking the lawn and flower beds. Some folks have already begun planting peas and other hearty vegetables in their garden. Businesses are re-opening for the season — Middletown Nursery and 7a Foods, to name just two. Last Sunday was the last of the discount gas until after Christmas. We want to thank Pat and Joan Jenkinson for making it available to all of us.

Well, it is spring but winter refuses to leave on schedule. Last Friday we awoke to a seven-inch snowfall. Now if the jet stream would kindly move north we could enjoy a taste of spring. Today is Good Friday and the beginning of the Easter weekend. Monday is April Fool’s Day, so be wary of practical jokes.

Well, last weekend the weather was bright but on the cold side. It rained a lot on Monday, though that still was better than the seven inches of snow that fell in Boston. Winter is having a hard time leaving us this year. The flowers are budding out most everywhere and spring began on Wednesday, but someone forgot to tell Mother Nature as it is projected to be on the cold side for the remainder of the month.
