Last year when John Kosboski sold his house, packed his belongings and hopped a jet plane bound for Hawaii, I never thought it would be the last time I saw him.
In baseball, a pinch hitter is a substitute batter. In academics, a substitute teacher is a person who temporarily teaches class when the regular teacher is unavailable. I’m not exactly sure if there’s a coined term for a substitute writer but, if there is, it’s defined as Katie Carroll this week.
It is spring, that is what we keep saying to ourselves. But as to true Vineyard springs, we don’t have one. June will come and we will go from 50 to 70 in one day. But until then we just have to be patient and think of all the green lawns and beautiful flowers we are going to have after all of this. I hope.
February, with its weather so mighty and variable, lends itself to scrolling the internet for random facts to share. Here are just a few that might prompt a little dinnertime chatter. Did you know, on Feb. 19, 1884, more than 60 tornadoes struck the southern U.S.?
On this Valentine’s weekend, I can’t help but share a quote from the famous Charles Schultz: “All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.” Could we be any luckier than to have a place like Chilmark Chocolates in our midst to fulfill all of our needs?
Katie Carroll at your service, taking responsibility for the timely and accurate sharing of newsy-goodness for the town of Chilmark. Let’s start this week off right with a few birthday shout outs. We have two, yes two, babes in town who have recently reached the one year marker
Bowling. It’s an alley you can play in, get three strikes yet you’re not out, and that’s how the Aquinnuts roll on Sunday evenings. Strikes, spares, gutter balls — they’re all good when the likes of Tom Murphy, Buddy Vanderhoop, Hollis Smith and Hughie Taylor get together. This past week, Hugh was unable to join his teammates so, thankfully, Chip Vanderhoop was able to stand in. They bowled amongst a packed house against a really impressive team (which possibly had a ringer who swooped in from somewhere off-Island) that scored more than 200 against the Aquinnuts’ impressive 174.
One really nice thing about June Manning taking a little breather from writing her column is the simple fact that I get to fill you in on her comings and goings. She would never write about herself and all of her adventures and escapades yet, she lives a truly full life that is fascinating. I’m not actually sure how the woman finds time to sleep.
Condolences to the Mahoney family, Jim, Melissa, Aileen, and Seamus, on the loss of their pup, Boru. He was, according to Melissa, a loving, kind, protective, loyal, and steady member of their family for 11-plus years. Boru, the one in a million dog, will be deeply missed.
Whenever there is a baby born into our community we jump for joy, but in addition to the baby, there is a family that gets to take center stage. Aretha Brown, daughter of Kate Taylor, and Keron Brown are proud parents of a healthy and lovely baby girl. Zuri Elizabeth Brown was welcomed into the world on Sept. 27, not only by her parents but by her most amazing big sister Fiona.
