Some decades ago Labor Day was as spirited a time as any August day. The big event was the multiple-day Oak Bluffs Tennis Club tournament. The club was founded in 1959 by Sen. Ed Brooke, Lincoln Pope, Barbara Loatman and others.

The seemingly unending crowds and lines at C’est La Vie, Union Chapel, Biscuits and other restaurants in Oak Bluffs have abated and given way to a number of manageable Island visitors and cool brisk days and nights.

Illumination Night is a historic tradition that is full of fun and community sharing.
