The morning of Sept. 11 was ideal for finding migrating songbirds. The night before was pleasant and the winds were out of the northwest, so the nocturnal migrating songbirds had favorable tailwinds.
As recently as 20 years ago, we would find a roosting flock with a thousand or more terns, primarily common and roseate terns with occasional Forster's and black terns, on the bay side of Norton Point Beach.
Most bird feeders have been taken down to maintain social distancing between birds because a disease of unknown cause has killed birds in the mid-Atlantic states this year.
Fifty years ago, we saw large flocks of great blue herons, 25 to 50 at a time. I remember the spectacle of seeing Felix Neck's marshes filled with these large herons.
