Friends that skate together stay together. Mark Lovewell

In January, the Martha's Vineyard Ice Arena is one of the busiest spots on the Island. The ice rink is the home ice for the regional high school hockey teams, and hosts hockey practices and games for all ages, skating lessons and figure skating.

The ice fills up on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays for public skating, when skaters of all ages and skill level take their turns practicing figure eights (or, for the very young, practicing standing up on skates). The public session costs $5 per person; children 5 and under are $2 and families $15. Schedules and information are available at the arena's website.
