Over the next several weeks, the Vineyard Haven Public Library will be showing and discussing Eyes on the Prize, the seven-part PBS documentary series that tells the story of the civil rights movement through news clips and interviews from the time it took place.
There will be several guest speakers. On the first evening Sheldon and Lucy Durr Hackney will be here.
Lucy’s mother, Virginia Durr, was involved in bailing Rosa Parks out of jail. Ms. Parks was famous for refusing to relinquish her bus seat to a white woman. Her arrest led to the Montgomery bus boycott and ignited the movement.
This magnificent series was presented on television more than 20 years ago, but because of litigation over copyrights for all the clips and interviews, it was not available on video until recently. Pick up your study guide at the front desk.
The first installment will be shown Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. Screening is approximately two hours long. The Vineyard Haven library is on Main street. Call 508-696-4211 for details.
