Artists wishing to participate in Treehouse Studios’ annual Nancy Luce show are invited to contact the gallery or submit works via e-mail to ruthadams1@comcast.net.

Works in all media will be considered for the show, which will open in October at the gallery located on State Road in West Tisbury, opposite Up-Island Cronig’s market.

Nancy Luce, who lived on the Island during the 1900s, was an early entrepreneur who rode a horse from West Tisbury to Edgartown to sell woolen goods to sea merchants. Later, after illness forced her to give up this venture, she began to publish poetry about her beloved chickens, as well as writings regarding her life and struggles.

She commissioned large tombstones to be made for two of her chickens, Ada Queetie and Tweedle Dedel Bebbee Pinky. These monuments are now displayed at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum in Edgartown.

Now somewhat of a folk-hero on the Vineyard, her fans keep chicken memorabilia by her grave in West Tisbury.

Information about the upcoming show is available by calling Ruth Adams at Treehouse Studios, 508-693-6645.

The show will open on Sunday, Oct. 12, and will continue through October. Accepted works must be ready to be hung in the gallery by Oct. 10.
