The Holmes Hole Sailing Association race on Thursday night July 22 was a warm evening with a pleasant 10 knots of west wind. Twelve boats posted for the 6 p.m. start at red nun 6. The course took the fleet to green can 23a at East Chop then to nun 4 at West Chop, and back to nun 6. The first leg was a broad reach on the port tack. After rounding the nun, a beat to West Chop was followed by a beam reach to the finish line.

Finishing first was Bob Jewett in the Soling Andiamo II. In second was Mike Loberg in the Morris 36 Masquerade. Third was Steve Besse in the J-120 Apres. Fourth was Jerry Goodale in Stormalong. Fifth was Dan Culkin in Magic Time. Sixth were Mary Worrell and David Brown in Second Wind. Seventh was Bow Van Riper in Tyche, eighth was Roger Becker in Gloria, ninth was Mo Flam in Lumia, 10th was Kathy Logue in Rocinante III, 11th was David Lott in Avanti and 12th were John and Lisa Stout in Isabella.

July 29 saw a break in the otherwise relentless July heat wave. Thirteen boats posted for the 6 p.m. start at red nun 6, with a nice 12 knot west southwest wind. The course took the fleet to nun 4 at West Chop, then to green can 23a at East Chop and back to nun 6. The first leg was a broad reach on the port tack. After rounding the nun, the fleet sailed a broad reach on the starboard tack, followed by a beat to the finish. Finishing first was Stephen Besse in the J 120 Après. In second was Jerry Goodale in the Pearson 32 Stormalong. In third was Phil Hale in the Soling, Wicked. Fourth were Mary Worrell and David Brown in Second Wind, fifth were John and Lisa Stout in Isabella, sixth was Rick Haslet in Destiny, seventh was Dan Culkin in Magic Time, eighth was Richard Glaser in Arrant Rose, ninth was Andy Berry in Isobar, 10th was Roger Becker in Gloria, 11th was David Lott in Avanti, 12th was Kath Logue in Rocinante III, and 13th was Mo Flam in Lumia.

Sunday, August 1 saw an east-southeast wind of around ten knots holding for both the morning and afternoon harbor races. In the morning, the race committee called for a course from nun 6 to red nun 4 at West Chop, then to red bell 2 in the Sound, then to buoy RW NW, then to green bell 23 near Oak Bluffs, with a final leg to red nun 6 in Vineyard Haven Harbor, honoring green can 23A at East Chop. Thirteen boats posted for the 10 a.m. start. The fleet started on the starboard tack and broad reached for nun 4. After rounding the nun, the boats sailed to bell 2 on a beam reach, hardened to a close reach to RW NW, beat to windward to green bell 23, and beam reached on the port tack to the finish.

In the A division, first was Phil Hale in the Alerion Mischief. In second was Stephen Besse in the J 120 Après. In third was Bob Jewett in the Soling Andiamo II. Fourth was Roger Becker in Gloria, fifth was Mike Loberg in Masquerade, sixth was Geoff Gibson in Latonka, seventh was Matt Thomas in Grasshopper and eighth was Kathy Logue in Rocinante III.

In the B division, first were John and Lisa Stout in the Gannon and Benjamin Sloop Isabella, second was Dan Culkin in the Vineyard Vixen Magic Time, third was Rebecca Colson in the Nonsuch Silhouette, fourth was Jim Pringle in Myfanwy and fifth was Mo Flam in Lumia.

At 2 p.m., 11 boats came to the line. The race committee set a five-mile course from nun 6 to buoy RW NW in the Sound, then to red nun 4 by West Chop, then to green can 23A at East Chop, and finishing at nun 6. The fleet sailed on a beam reach on the starboard tack to RW NW, broad reached to nun 4, beat to windward to can 23A, and beam reached to the finish line.

Finishing first in the A division was Frank Satula in the J 28 Magic Twanger. In second was Mike Loberg in the Morris 36 Masquerade. Third was Phil Hale in the Alerion Mischief. Fourth was Steve Besse in Après and fifth was Andy Berry in Isobar.

In the B division, first were John and Lisa Stout in the Gannon and Benjamin Sloop Isabella. In second, Tom and Laurie Welch in the Vineyard Vixen Eastaway; third, David Lott in the Cape Dory 27 Avanti; fourth, Mo Flam in Lumia; fifth, Rebecca Colson in Silhouette; and sixth, Joe Vera in Sole E Mar.
