We had a wet spring. June has been extremely wet and we are still nine days from the last day of the month. As of Tuesday, the Vineyard received 5.98 inches of rainfall in the first 18 days of the month. Rainfall is measured at the National Weather Service cooperative station in Edgartown.

Since June arrived, the Vineyard has received measurable rainfall on 13 of those 18 days. We’ve had three June days when more than an inch of rain fell.

February remains the wettest month of the year, so far, with 6.63 inches of precipitation.

May was wet with 5.40 inches of rainfall. April, too, was wet, with a total of 4.62 inches.

Big Full Moon

Tomorrow night’s full moon won’t just look big as it rises in the east; it is big. The full moon is close, in perigee, closer to the Earth, than it usually is in its 28 day orbit around the Earth. Astronomers estimate the moon is just short of 222,000 miles away.

The moon’s orbit around the Earth is eliptical. Once a month, the moon is close and once a month it is farthest away, in apogee. But only a few times a year, the moon is both full and in perigee.

Extreme high and low tides will continue through the week, a product of this astronomical event.
