Friday, June 28: Heavy shower in the morning. Dark skies. Foggy. Low altitude clouds overhead. A damp afternoon. Light rain on Main street in Vineyard Haven doesn’t stop shoppers from filling the sidewalks and coming out of the stores. Stores are busy. Ferryboat horn. Skies lighten in the late afternoon.
Saturday, June 29: Thick fog erases Chappaquiddick from view at Memorial Wharf. Rain at noon. Damp southwest wind in the afternoon. Some gusts reach over 20 mph. A large turnout at the old Marine Hospital for Evening of Discovery under the tent. Visibility over Lagoon Pond and the Vineyard Haven harbor is limited to a few miles as waves of fog move across the land and water.
Sunday, June 30: Early morning gray skies. Skies lighten in the afternoon. Lawnmowers and hedge clippers sound off in Vineyard Haven. A brief shower. Sailboats in the outer Vineyard Haven harbor.
Monday, July 1: Overcast. Leaden skies over Nantucket Sound. Boats, with bright white sails, pass off Cape Pogue. Daylilies are in full bloom along Middle Road in Chilmark. One tractor runs a line across a large field, cutting hay at Flat Point Farm. Small sailors in little boats race just off the Edgartown Yacht Club dock.
Tuesday, July 2: Rain in the early morning. Skies break. Brief moments of sun and blue skies. A prevailing southwest wind. Low clouds and fog blow in from the south. Light drizzle in Vineyard Haven at lunch time. Roads and driveways are dry in the afternoon.
Wednesday, July 3: Thick fog in the morning. South Beach attracts a small crowd of sunbathers. Overcast. Occasional periods of sunshine. A break in the clouds over the West Tisbury center of town. Alley’s General Store is bustling. Clouds return.
Thursday, July 4: Independence Day. The forecast is for partly sunny skies. Prevailing southwest wind. Parade.
