Vineyarders are bracing for frigid temperatures tonight as the year's first big snowstorm brought with it large snowdrifts and windy conditions most of Friday. Total snowfall as of 9 a.m. this morning was eight inches.
Temperatures are expected to drop to six degrees tonight, with wind chills of 15-below late tonight and into tomorrow. Sengekontacket Pond began to freeze over late Friday afternoon.
The Vineyard Transit Authority has resumed some of its routes, but service on the 2, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10A are suspended until Saturday. Peter Pan Bus suspended all bus service between Woods Hole and Boston on Friday and is expected to resume on Saturday.
The Steamship Authority resumed ferry service this afternoon, but are running on a trip by trip basis. The Chappy Ferry also resumed service around 2 p.m. Ferry owner Peter Wells said the tide began to drop right at 1:15 p.m., the high tide hour, and waters are receding from previously flooded areas on the waterfront. He noted that there is still a strong northwest wind, "which is a good direction for us," he said.
Few cars were on the roads today as plowing got underway. The high tide caused flooding along Dock street in Edgartown, bringing large chunks of snow floating in the town parking lots along the waterfront.
Some ventured out for a walk and to shop. The Edgartown thrift store opened for one hour while a volunteer shoveled the walk outside, inviting passersby in from the cold. Others looked for a snack.
"Look, Dock street is closed," said a woman passing by the year-round coffee shop. "I thought they were open 365 days."
