High school sports teams for the most part continued their winning ways at home over the weekend.
Girls’ hockey took their first loss of the season Sunday against rival Scituate, falling 2-1 in a close game. The team remains undefeated in league play, after an 8-1 defeat of Bishop Stang at home on Saturday.
In that game junior Sydney Davies went beyond a hat trick, scoring four goals. Junior Aubrey Ashmun and senior Callie Jackson each scored two goals, and junior Olivia Ogden proved key on assists. The Vineyarders held Stang scoreless until the final two minutes of the game.
The girls are now 4-1-1 on the season and continue home play this weekend when they host the annual Nan Rheault Tournament.
Shortly after the hockey rout, the girls’ basketball team also picked up a resounding win, going 54-19 against visiting Dennis-Yarmouth. The Vineyard defense held the Dolphins to just two points in both the first and third quarters. Nine different players scored for the team, with senior captain Kat deBettencourt scoring 18 points. Freshman Erin Hill scored eight, with five blocks and five offensive rebounds.
“I’d say everyone put in their time,” head coach Julie Schmidt said after the game, noting the defense in particular. Every player came off the bench, with freshman Whitney Schroeder making her first varsity start after moving up from junior varsity.
The Vineyarders are now 6-3 and next play at home on Saturday against North Reading. Game time is at 3:15 p.m.
Strong defense led the way for the boys’ basketball team as well; during Sunday’s league game against Coyle and Cassidy the Vineyarders picked up a 70-45 win. Coyle was scoreless until the fifth minute of the game and trailed by 24 points at the half.
As in the girls’ game, the starting five took a back seat to the younger members of the squad, all of whom saw considerable playing time. The game marked junior Mike Mussell’s first game back from a football season injury.
Senior Deshawn James led the scoring with 13 points, including one particularly crowd-pleasing dunk, and junior playmaker Matt Stone notched 10. Senior Matt Marchand scored nine points, all on three-point shots.
“We shot better tonight than we have in awhile,” head coach Mike Joyce said. “We’re so strong with the inside game we haven’t had a lot of outside shooting.”
The boys have not lost a game since their season opener and are now 6-1. They will take on league archrival Bishop Feehan on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
Boys’ swimming picked up its first win of the season Monday afternoon with a 72-21 win against Pope John Paul High School. Freshman Patrick Best set a school record in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:34.73, and also earned a win in the 50-yard freestyle. Tucker Cosgrove (100 yard butterfly), Raz Sayre (100 yard breaststroke) and Nevin Wallis (200 yard freestyle) earned individual wins in their respective events while setting personal bests. The boys also picked up wins in three relays.
The girls’ swim squad lost a close meet 96-68, with cocaptain Mariah Campbell, Renee Goodale and Kate Hansen taking individual wins and the 200 freestyle relay team of Cambell, Hansen, Goodale and Alistair Rizza) nabbing first as well.
The Vineyarders’ final home meet of the season is Thursday against Sandwich at 3 p.m. at the YMCA.
