The weather gods toyed with the Holmes Hole fleet this past week. Thursday’s race was cancelled due to rain and lightning. On Sunday, light air harried the racers into abandoning the morning competition. Sunday afternoon the winds returned enough to push eight boats around harbor course No. 1 in reverse.

The fast boats in the A division went around the buoys twice in NNE winds of 10 knots. Phil Hale aboard Tango, a J/100, traversed the course with impressive speed, eventually lapping the last boat in the B division whose race was shortened to a single lap.

Beck Colson took second, finishing 11 minutes behind the streaking Tango on corrected time aboard Silhouette, a Nonsuch 26. And Mo Flam skippered his Alerion 28 Penelope to third, continuing his summer-long top-3 finishes.

David Lott took the blue ribbon over a depleted B Division, which was missing several regular competitors. Bow Van Riper grabbed a second on Tyche, a Vineyard 15, while Woody Bowman guided the yawl Tern to third.

Sailors should be planning to sign up for the annual Moffett Race, which will be held on Saturday, Sept. 6. To registration, visit the Holmes Hole website at holmeshole.org.

Sunday, August 17, will be a Sound Race with a noon start.
