About a month after the Norton Point breach closed, vehicle traffic is again allowed on the barrier beach connecting Edgartown and Chappaquiddick.

Chris Kennedy, Martha’s Vineyard superintendent for the Trustees of Reservations said oversand vehicle passage is once again allowed on Norton Point Beach, nearly eight years after a northeaster cut a breach in the three-mile spit of sand.

Mr. Kennedy cautioned that the only vehicle access to the beach on Chappaquiddick is at the Dike Bridge at Cape Pogue; there is no Norton Point access from Wasque. Those wishing to make the drive will need oversand vehicle permits for both Cape Pogue and Norton Point. Mr. Kennedy said the cost for both is $250 for Island residents and $300 for non-residents.

“Obviously the challenge will be keeping an eye on it, and hopefully we don’t have any major overwashing,” Mr. Kennedy said. “While it’s open right now, it may close again if conditions change.”

He added that the beach is typically most stable during the spring and summer.

For the latest conditions, travelers can contact the beach access hotline, 508-627-8390.

With the breach blocking oversand access for the last eight years, the Chappaquiddick Ferry has been the only method of transportation on and off the island.
