Tisbury's Main Street will close to traffic and open for festivities on Friday night for the town's annual street fair. The fun takes place from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., with music, food, and vendor stalls. This year it is also Cora Medeiros Day, in honor of the fair's founding mother and longtime town selectman who died in May.

Young singer-songwriter Dana Williams, who cites Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday as her inspirations, will perform at Alex's Place at the YMCA on Friday. The show begins at 8 p.m.

Alison Shaw moved here in 1970 and began chronicling the Island with her camera. This weekend, she celebrates the 10th anniversary of the opening of her gallery with a party from 5 to to 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 9 at the gallery, 88 Dukes County avenue. 

Fifty years ago The Ogres — described as one of the original hippie bands, even an early boy band — spent two summers playing on the Vineyard. Some of the band reunited years later to play as the band Fountainhead. On Saturday four members of the band reunite for a reunion performance at the Lampost; doors open at 7 p.m.

Broadway comes to the Vineyard this weekend as Tony, Emmy, and Grammy-nominated actress and singer Vanessa Williams opens Broadway @ Performing Arts Center series on Saturday, July 9 at 8 p.m. (at the Performing Arts Center, of course). This is the Broadway series' inaugural Vineyard event; producing artistic director Mark Cortale has brought Broadway stars to stages in Provincetown, Boston, and beyond for the last five years. The new Vineyard series will continue with a performance by Megan Hilty on July 16.

Classical and jazz pianist Charles Whitehead will be on the Island this weekend for two concerts to raise money for Hospitality Homes, a new organization formed to help homeless on the Island. On July 9 Mr. Whitehead performs at the Whaling Church, showtime at 8 p.m. On July 10 the performance is at a private home.

Crumbs from the Table of Joy, written by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Lynn Nottage, opened at the Martha's Vineyard Playhouse on Thursday, July 7 and runs through July 30.

Painter Jen Christy (who is also the Chilmark town clerk) draws Island inspiraton for her abstract art. Her paintings will be on display from July 9 through July 23. An artist's reception will be held at the Field Gallery for her and Jeff Hoerle on Sunday, July 10, from 5 to 7 p.m.
