Vineyard voters backed Robert Ogden for county sheriff and Paulo C. DeOliveira as Register of Deeds in Thursday’s primary, which sets the ballot for the general election in November.
According to preliminary results, Mr. Ogden, a West Tisbury resident who has worked at the sheriff’s office for 26 years, won the Democratic primary race for Dukes County sheriff with 2,355 votes. He defeated Marc R. Rivers, who received 1,395 votes.
Neal J. Maciel, an unenrolled candidate from Vineyard Haven, will be on the ballot in November. The winner of that race will replace Michael McCormack, who is retiring.
Mr. DeOliveira of Edgartown won the four-way Democratic race for Register of Deeds with 2,607 votes. Mr. DeOliveira is currently the assistant Register of Deeds.
He will face unenrolled candidate Martina Thornton in November in the race to replace retiring register Dianne Powers.
Candace A. (Candy) Nichols came in second in the Register of Deeds race with 596 votes; Eve L. Vincent received 332 votes and Laura J. Hairston, 257.
In other races Vineyard voters backed winner Mark C. Alliegro in the Republican primary for 9th District U.S. Rep. Mr. Alliegro, a scientist, defeated Thomas Joseph O. Malley Jr. by a margin of 275 to 210 on the Island.
Mr. Alliegro will face incumbent William Keating, who was unopposed in the primary, on the November ballot.
The race for Cape and Islands state senator is down to two, with Anthony E. Schiavi winning the Republican primary and Julian Andre Cyr the winner on the Democratic side.
On the Vineyard Mr. Cyr of Truro, a director of policy and regulatory affairs for the state Department of Public Health narrowly beat Sheila R. Lyons, 1388 to 1314. And Vineyard voters backed Mr. Schiavi’s opponent, James H. Crocker Jr., 261 to 210. Mr. Schiavi lives in Harwich and is a retired Brigadier General with the U.S. Air Force.
Mr. Schiavi and Mr. Cyr will face off in November to replace state Sen. Dan Wolf, who is not seeking re-election.
Dylan A. Fernandes of Falmouth was the winner in the hotly contested race to replace retiring state Rep. Tim Madden. But the Vineyard backed a local candidate, T. Ewell Hopkins Jr., who received 2,109 votes on the Island. Mr. Fernandes came in second among Vineyard voters with 1,337 votes, followed by Jessica G. Lambert with 165, Timothy M. Soverino with 63, and Michael G. Heylin with 47.
Mr. Fernandes, who formerly worked for Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey, will face two unenrolled candidates in November.
Traffic at the polls was relatively light on the Vineyard on Thursday, a warm and humid day on the Island, with voter turnout at about 30 per cent. Turnout was highest in Chilmark and West Tisbury, with about 36 per cent of voters casting ballots.
