Eight candidates are running for seven seats on the Dukes County Commission. The Gazette emailed questions to all the candidates asking them to speak to their qualifications and the role of the commission.

Gretchen Underwood
Town: Oak Bluffs
Occupation, Retired administrator

Reason for Running

I have spent all my years enjoying the beauty, charm and atmosphere of Martha’s Vineyard. Now is the time for me to seek reelection to the commission that preserves all of these for generations to come.

Qualifications

As a public school administrator, it was my responsibility to coalesce a diverse community toward the common good. There were always many opinions as to what this good was but by keeping a focus on the students’ needs the path became clear.

On this Island, there are also many opinions as to what benefits the greater good. By considering the taxpayers, the tourists, the elderly and the students, the challenge is to keep this beautiful Island accessible to all there is to offer.

Role of County Commission

For most organizations, money is a limited resource. That is also true for the Dukes County Commission.

We must make decisions that benefit all of our inhabitants, while being fiscally responsible, answering such question as: Who will house the homeless during winter storms? Who will provide resources for the frail and elderly? Who will see that our airport is staffed with competent administrators? Who will rally for treatment centers for the chemically dependent? In order to answer such questions as a commissioner I will listen, research and respond by advocating resources to such needs.
