Eight candidates are running for seven seats on the Dukes County Commission. The Gazette emailed questions to all the candidates asking them to speak to their qualifications and the role of the commission.

Town: Chilmark
Occupation: Retired

Reason for Running

I feel that my education and experience in business, on boards and consulting will make me a valuable member of the commission. As other responsibilities have diminished, I now have the time to contribute to this position.

I would like to be in a position to explore ways in which the Dukes County Commission can provide more continuity on a wider basis to the many services now provided by individual towns.

Qualifications

Bachelor of arts in psychology, Boston University, master’s in industrial and labor relations, Cornell University; commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy. Founded a contract furniture company in Lowell in 1966. Built it to two locations in the Boston area, two locations in greater London, U.K., and four in the greater San Francisco area including Silicon Valley. Sold the company in 1992, moved to the Vineyard full time in 1995. Served as an elected member of the Martha’s Vineyard Commission for four years (two terms). I believe in term limits. After a number of consecutive years served it is appropriate to step down for a minimum of two years to both gain new perspective and to include new people on boards.

I served as a member of the board and vice president of Vineyard House. As a retiree, I have participated in the management of a small investment corporation. In addition I have consulted with several small companies on a pro bono basis.

Role of the County Commission

The commission is charged with appointments to boards and individual responsibilities, I feel that my education and experience will be of value in making the these personnel decisions. I also feel that the commission should take a greater role in providing Islandwide services.
