John Breckenridge
Town: Oak Bluffs
Occupation: Retired

Reason for Running

I have been proud to serve the Island for the past 12 years as a member of the commission. There is important work and challenges that can utilize my background and experience serving the Island community.

Qualifications

My full-time residence on the Island for the past 16 years has been highlighted by giving back to the community. My civic activities have included membership on the Oak Bluffs conservation commission, parks chairman to the East Chop Association — managing over 40 parcels of open space that have maintained the communities character, and chairman to the Oak Bluffs harbor advisory committee providing advice and oversight to a key economic engine to the town. My 40 year career in the food service industry brought me a keen awareness of the hospitality industry that welcomes guests to our Island each summer season. I am currently the elected clerk-treasurer to the commission.

Commission’s Unique Mission

The MVC’s planning responsibilities are key to maintaining the unique fabric of the Island. Growth has presented challenges with maintaining the fundamental health of the Island’s waters. The MVC has worked closely with the many stakeholders addressing this pressing and complicated issue. Similarly, the Island faces extreme challenges with affordable housing. The MVC has worked closely in partnership with the many Island agencies that are addressing this problem. The MVC is not only a planning resource to the towns but is also able to provide umbrella protection to the many values that are important to each Island resident and their towns.
