Fourteen candidates are running for nine seats on the Martha’s Vineyard Commission. The Gazette emailed questions to all the candidates asking them about their reasons for running, qualifications, and to speak to the unique mission of the 41-year-old regional planning agency.

Reason for Running

As a 1998 MVRHS graduate, with a degree in political science and environmental studies from Goucher College in Baltimore, I feel I can act as a voice for the next generation of Islanders. I know that the Island depends on its natural resources as well as its status as a premier tourist destination. It is all about balance and priorities. I will continue to work to protect the Island’s environment while allowing for sensible development.

Qualifications

Being the youngest member on the commission, my major qualification is that I care and I show up. The commission needs the next generation to give input, time and energy. I love the Vineyard, I choose to return and live here and I feel that I have to help keep the Vineyard magical.

Commission’s Unique Mission

I think the MVC is consistently evolving in its commitment to do a better job of meeting complicated diverse goals. Currently the MVC is reviewing its nitrogen policy in an effort to adapt to new data generated by the Massachusetts Estuaries Project. When there is a conflict between the character, social fabric and economy, we depend on the public to show up and offer advice. Then based on who the public elects, we vote.

Available Time Commitment

I try to put in as much time as needed.
