There have been a series of beautiful days. Chilly mornings, but moving into lovely afternoons. I’m happy for the time change this weekend. I’m sick of the pitch dark in the morning. I’d rather have it in the early evening when I’m already tired from the day.

I always thought of Daylight Saving Time as the night people stealing from the morning people. But no matter what anyone thinks, this is the new reality. Before we know it, it will be Christmas and the days will be getting longer.

I’ve been busy dividing hostas. Now is a great time for moving plants around. It is still fresh in the mind where things are and where they should be. Hostas are one of my favorite perennials. They are fabulous in full shade, can survive in drought, flower in late summer, and last forever. They are only bothered by slugs and deer.

Once, probably 40 years ago, I found one at the old Tisbury Landfill. It was upside down and mostly dried up, and easily as big as a small table top. I was able to divide it into about a dozen plants. I still have them and have passed around divisions for years.

I picked my last eggplant. It was small — a single serving. All eggplants are single servings in my house as all other family members dislike them. I peeled it and sauteed it for my breakfast the other day. I added a handful of pecans and one of dried blueberries, and topped it off with some Grey Barn cheese. I considered myself a culinary genius. I used the Eidolon cheese. It is really wonderful.

I attacked a strand of over-grown lilacs. I spent time sitting on a bucket, with a saw and loppers in hand. I cut away everything near the base of each shrub. Then, I took some time sorting out the really overgrown and wonky branches. Lilacs want to be very sparse at the bottom and then branch out to large tops. I cut all the spent flower blossoms from last spring, being careful not to disturb next year’s buds. Sometimes I leave a few nicely shaped parts to form new plants. They can be cut from the parent’s root and moved to a new spot. Have patience, though. They can take up to 10 years to bloom. The white ones are more fragrant than the purples, by the way.

I enjoyed the Charter School’s scarecrows at various local businesses. Oh, and a quick shout-out to CB Stark. The window boxes and side display of pumpkins are exceptionally nice.

Donald Trump is right, Hillary’s email scandal is worse than Watergate. Stay with me, people. During Watergate, high people in the Nixon administration were responsible for the break-in at the Democratic National Headquarters at the Watergate complex in Washington. Heads rolled and a sitting president resigned before a possible impeachment could take place. This year the DNC computers were hacked by Russia. Sources say those responsible were high up in the Kremlin, possibly all the way to Trump’s BFF, Vladimir. And yet, for some reason, we are focused on the content of those hacks rather than the perpetrator. I mean seriously, Russia!

I’m old enough to remember duck-and-cover in the 1950s. It is scandalous that a foreign government is involved in our election.

I am so over this election. I do not believe I’ve ever experienced such a high level of anxiety for so long. By next week we will know. I’m not sure I am prepared for the outcome.
