Back by popular demand, Le Patin Libre, the ice skating dance company from Montreal, Canada that literally brings the audience onto the ice, returns to the Vineyard this weekend for one day of shows.

“Enough people had tackled me at Cronig’s and said when are they coming back,” said Yard artistic director David White.

Le Patin Libre will perform Vertical Influences at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25.

First introduced to the Island during last year’s Winter Yard series, Le Patin Libre brings a new art form to the Martha’s Vineyard Ice Arena. There are none of the sequins one would expect when the words “ice” and “dancing” are paired together. In fact the performers look as unassuming as the audience.

“It’s a bunch of ordinary people, in a sense, who go out and do this very not ordinary work,” said Mr. White.

Le Patin Libre was created in 2005 by a group of classically trained high level figure skaters. The current company (Alexandre Hamel, Pascale Jodoin, Samory Ba, Taylor Dilley and Jasmin Boivin) have been together for six years.

During the first half of the show, the audience sits in the stands, as if it were any other ice rink event. In the second half, the audience moves down onto the ice, sitting on rows of carpets and chairs. The move changes the perspective for the audience, sitting on the stage as it were, and allows Le Patin Libre to play with depth. The lights go out and in the darkness the audience hears only the sound of skates moving fast across the ice, until suddenly the skaters appear up close, just a few feet away.

The experience is for the whole family.

“Any of what they are doing will capture the figure skating family, hockey family the long-suffering Bruins fan,” Mr. White said. “It’s not choreographed specifically for kids, but they are totally taken up with seeing something on ice that’s not defined by competition.”

Le Patin Libre will perform Vertical Influences at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25. at the Martha’s Vineyard Ice Arena. Tickets are available at dancetheyard.org.
