An Oak Bluffs man has been sentenced to five years in state prison on charges including drug trafficking.

Jeffrey A. Sylvia, 28, pleaded guilty Feb. 21 in Dukes County superior court on charges of trafficking in more than 36 and less than 100 grams of heroin/morphine/opium, possessing a class B drug, and possessing a class D drug. Hon. Cornelius J. Moriarty 2nd sentenced him to five years in prison at MCI-Cedar Junction in Walpole, with 351 days of jail credit. He was sentenced to three years of probation following the jail time.

He will not be prosecuted on charges of possessing to distribute a class A drug, subsequent offense and drug violation near a school or park.

Mr. Sylvia was arrested in the summer of 2015 after Martha’s Vineyard Drug Task Force officers executed a search warrant at an Oak Bluffs home. According to police at the time, officers found needles and other items related to drug use, and allegedly located a safe in Mr. Sylvia’s room that contained about 46 grams of heroin, three Suboxone strips, crushed Percocet pills, about an ounce of marijuana, and almost $9,000 in cash.

Mr. Sylvia was indicted by a Dukes County grand jury last spring. About two weeks later Mr. Sylvia was arrested in Dorchester on a charge of trafficking heroin in a school zone. He has been held in Suffolk County Jail.
