Some artists prefer indoor studios to create their work while others opt for en plein air, or painting outdoors. This week, starting with an exhibition on Sunday, Sept. 3, the Old Sculpin Gallery in Edgartown is celebrating the en plein air style by also going outdoors. The reception on Sunday will be at the gallery, from 5 to 7 p.m., but other events are scheduled throughout the week to watch artists at work in the fields.

For the exhibit, 12 artists have been painting outside since early in the summer, varying their spots. These include Anna (Lowely) Finnerty, Marjorie Mason, Judith Howells, June Schoppe, Kanta Lipsky, Kate Taylor, Valentine Estabrook, Janis Langley, Gail Rodney, Lizzy Schule and Anne Besse-Shepherd.

In June and July the artists painted at three locations: Bend in the Road, Duarte’s Pond and Menemsha. During August they visited Tashmoo and South Beach.

On Tuesday, Sept. 5, there will be a demonstration by Marjorie Mason from 5 to 6 p.m. at Memorial Wharf. And on Wednesday, Sept. 6, artists will paint on the front lawn of the Harbor View Hotel.

The closing night reception is Friday, Sept. 9, from 7 to 9 p.m., back at the Old Sculpin Gallery.
