West Tisbury resident and acclaimed historian David McCullough has received a Christopher Award for his recent book The American Spirit: Who We Are and What We Stand For.

The Christopher Awards celebrate authors, illustrators, producers and directors whose work “affirms the highest values of the human spirit,” according to a press release.

Mr. McCullough has also received a Christopher Lifetime Achievement Award and was honored for his book John Adams.

The American Spirit, a collection of Mr. McCullough’s speeches, explores ideals, values, and individuals that have brought out the best in Americans. The speeches were given at the White House, Congress, colleges, and other institutions.

The 69th annual Christopher Awards will be celebrated May 17 at a gala in New York city.
