What’s the difference between a graveyard and cemetery?
Who does not belong in following list and why? The Wizard of Oz, the Great Gatsby, JoJo White and Bob Dole.
What does “clyte” mean?
The answers are saved for the end of the article, but the questions are just a small taste of the whimsical wordplay and colloquial comedy coming to the Vineyard next week with a live performance of the hit radio quiz show Says You! The reunion show takes place on August 14 at the Hebrew Center in Vineyard Haven, and will feature the original cast.
The show’s executive producer, Laura Sher, said that the Vineyard show will be the first time in four years that the full cast will be back together. The show, which hit the airwaves in 1996, has since recorded over 500 episodes and is broadcast by close to 100 radio stations across the country.
For those new to the show, Ms. Sher is quick to point out that the program is not a trivia show. She called it the hardest game in any media and what’s important isn’t getting the right answer, but the most liked answer.
“The hook for Says You! is that this is comedy with words at the expense of the English language,” she said. “In a nutshell what this is, is the farthest thing from trivia you can get. It’s for people that love words, love language and love thinking.”
The show has five rounds that involve miscellaneous wordplay questions that a regular group of panelists, divided into two teams, attempt to humorously answer.
For most of the show’s 22 years, the cast included Carolyn Faye Fox, Arnie Reisman, Paula Lyons, Tony Kahn, Francine Achbar and host Barry Nolan. Though Ms. Sher said most are now “semi-retired globetrotters,” she said they couldn’t pass up the chance to meet on the Vineyard for a special reunion show.
Ms. Sher said that every show is recorded live in front of a studio audience and no panelist receives a script so that the jokes and gaffes are as fresh as possible. She said she expects the Hebrew Center performance to be as uproarious as ever, and the audience will be encouraged to participate in the fun.
“Laughter needs to be shared,” she said. “The curiosity and sense of learning on the Vineyard is infectious and such an important part of the longevity of this show.”
Says You! on the Vineyard begins at 4:30 p.m. on August 14. There is also a VIP question and answer session with the cast beginning at 3:30 p.m. for premium ticket holders. Visit saysyouradio.com for tickets and more information.
