Ice House Pond reopened to swimming Thursday morning after being closed for a second time this summer due to high bacteria counts.

Water samples taken Wednesday showed enterococci levels in the pond had dropped to zero colonies per hundred milliliters, Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank land manager Ian Peach said.

The pond has been closed twice in the past month because of high bacterial levels.

Mr. Peach said testing will continue to ensure safety for swimmers.

“We will be monitoring the situation closely and re-sample early next week,” he said.

The West Tisbury swimming hole had been closed since last Wednesday after testing above safe levels for enterococci, a bacteria that can cause infections.

It marked the second time this summer the pond has been closed to swimmers.
