It is so cold as I write this. The heat is on and it feels like the thermostat does not go high enough. I am usually not unhappy about the cold but this cold is not nice. But according to the weather and our typical New England weather it will 50 degrees on Thursday — beach weather.

Happy Birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Clarissa Pinto who celebrated her day Jan. 19; Kayo De Oliveira Jan. 20; Rita Hurley and Addison Shemit Jan. 22; and to Autumn Donnelly who celebrated Jan. 23.

February is Black History Month, so mark your calendar for Saturday, Feb. 2, to join the League of Women Voters for a public event at the Oak Bluffs Library from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Refreshments will be served. Joining the league as sponsors are the local chapters of the NAACP and the Association for the Study of African American Life. Guest speaker, Walter Collier, an Oak Bluffs resident, will discuss his book Why Racism Persists, An Uncomfortable Truth.

I think even if you are not a sports enthusiast, people are excited about the Patriots going to the Super Bowl again. Yes there are haters and people who are sick of them going once again to the big game. But we have to enjoy it while it is happening. Of course it would be better if they did not make it so nail biting to the end of the game.

I can also relate to the people who are tired of the Pats and the Super Bowl. I use to and still do not like the Cowboys when they were strong and winning all the time. However, it is not because of their playing or all the technical reasons. I did not think it was natural of Jimmy Johnson’s hair to never move no matter what the weather was. I know it is not a technicality, but I did not understand football then, as I do now, so it made sense to me.

Also, that night was the eclipse. We have all maybe seen one or two, but this one was awesome. We were all still high from the game and when I let the dog out I thought I would just look up and see if I could see anything AS the weather was so crumby that day. It turned out to be so clear you could not miss it. The color was awesome and if you were dressed warm enough you could stay and watch for a while. But I just went in and out a couple of times.

I hope you are all keeping warm or in a warm place. Spring is closer today than it was yesterday.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
