Chilmark voters gave final approval for funding architectural and design work on a new public safety building at a special election Wednesday.

Voters agreed 78-22 to exempt $440,000 from the provisions of Proposition 2 1/2 to pay for the design work.

The money will be added to $200,000 previously approved.

Chilmark selectmen are currently in contract negotiations with Daedalus Projects Inc. to oversee the project, which will include a new building to house the Tri-Town ambulance, and extensive renovations on the fire station at Beetlebung Corner.

The town aims to have architectural drawings completed in time for the April annual town meeting.

West Tisbury and Aquinnah have agreed in concept to share the cost of construction on the new ambulance building
