A fire on Pilgrim Road burned a garage and two cars in Edgartown Wednesday afternoon, fire chief Alex Schaeffer told the Gazette by phone Thursday. No one was injured in the fire.

Mr. Schaeffer said the firefighters responded to a call at 4:57 p.m. Wednesday for a vehicle on fire in a garage. On the way to the fire, an ambulance diverted to a crash on Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road, which was later handled by Oak Bluffs Fire and EMS.

Upon arriving at the Pilgrim Road garage, Mr. Schaeffer said the garage and two trucks, one inside and one outside, were completely engulfed in flames. He said the cause of the fire was determined to be an accidental ignition from work being done on one of the trucks.

“The entire thing was completely involved,” he said. “Knocking that down, it took two separate hose lines.”

The Tisbury Fire Department assisted with the blaze, and Oak Bluffs later arrived to help ensure the fire was completely extinguished. Mr. Schaeffer said the fire was under control by 5:20 p.m.

“There was a lot of what we call overhaul, where we go through the material in the garage,” Mr. Schaeffer said.
