Moon and Mars Tonight

A bright gibbous moon appears underneath the red planet Mars tonight. Mars is in the zodiacal constellation Taurus, a constellation we associate with winter. The moon is edging towards the zodiacal constellation Gemini.

Enjoy the sight of Mars. You haven't seen Mars this bright for at least the last two years and it will continue to brighten through the month. Mars will be as close as 38.8 million miles when it reaches opposition on Dec. 1. The planet will continue to dominate our skies in the weeks ahead and well into the winter. Jupiter appears to the west and it is the brighter of the two.

Each night ahead, Mars rises in the east a little earlier. By the end of this month it will rise in the east at sunset. Take a look now and enjoy the sight as the planet gets closer.
