The first of three CPR classes to be held at the Chappy Community Center is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 14 from 1 to 4 p.m. The sign-up deadline is Dec. 1. If you miss that one, you have another chance on Sunday, Jan. 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The sign-up deadline for that class is Dec. 27. The third and last class is Monday, Jan. 23 from 1 to 4 p.m. The deadline to sign up for the last class is Jan. 9. Contact Laura Pla at elpla@mac.com for more information and to sign-up.

The Chappaquiddick Community Center has busy Sundays planned for the month of December. Yoga with Jason Mazar-Kelly is held from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m on Sundays. Knit, Craft and Chat is back every Sunday until Christmas. Join your friends and neighbors from 3 to 4:30 p.m. to get a head start on holiday gifts, finish up a project or start a new one. Light refreshments will be served. Also: mark your calendar for the annual Holiday Tea on Dec. 18 from 3 to 5 p.m.

The next potluck will be the Chappy Ferry captain and crew appreciation dinner on Wednesday, Dec. 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. This is a chance to have more than a one-minute conversation with the hardworking folks who get you across the water in all sorts of weather.

Now is the time of year to consider a donation to the Chappaquiddick Community Center. Your tax-deductible gifts, both large and small, will enable our much-loved center to look to the future with confidence and security. The center is a nonprofit organization.

It’s also a good time to renew or to start your community center membership. If you need a venue for a wedding, family reunion or a big gathering, the center is available for rent. See chappycommunitycenter.org for information.

The Chappy Ferry steering committee meets again via Zoom on Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 5 p.m. to continue mulling over the ferry fare increase request. The following Monday, Dec. 12, the Edgartown select board will hold a hearing on the matter. It will also be held over Zoom, this one at 4 p.m. The fare increase request is detailed in a legal notice elsewhere in this edition of the Gazette. Zoom links for both meetings can be found on the town website as the dates approach.

Though you will have to wait until May to again get rid of household hazardous waste, products containing mercury are collected free of charge at all of the refuse district facilities during their regular business hours. This includes watch batteries, hearing aid batteries, thermometers, barometers, fluorescent bulbs and neon bulbs. The Edgartown transfer station is closed on Mondays and holidays, but otherwise open Tuesday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Sundays 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The scale closes a half hour before the end of the business day.

The dedicated staff at the Edgartown transfer station are getting off early on Christmas Eve, so you will want to get there before 11 a.m. that day.
