A bout of severe winter weather is expected to hit the Island this weekend, bringing frigid temperatures Friday night into Saturday.

The Island is under a wind chill advisory from the National Weather Service. Temperatures may reach as low as zero degrees on Saturday and winds up to 45 miles per hour winds may make it feel like minus 40 degrees.

The chill is part of an Arctic blast weather event, according to a notice from the Dukes County Emergency Management. Spokesman Russell Hartenstine urged Islanders to remain calm in the face of what is likely to be a short chill.

The county organization recommends homeowners keep their homes above 65 degrees to avoid pipes bursting, make sure heaters work properly and check their smoke alarms. Officials also recommend limiting time outdoors to prevent frostbite.

Mr. Hartenstine encouraged people to lookout for one another.

“It’s important for our neighbors to take care of each other,” he said.

In the event of a power outage, each of the town libraries will be open this Saturday. The Vineyard Haven and West Tisbury libraries will also be open on Sunday.

Those in need of shelter this weekend should get in contact with Harbor Homes of Martha’s Vineyard, which will be offering extended hours at their shelter this weekend. Those wishing to stay overnight must register as a guest.
