After being indicted by a federal grand jury last week, three men pleaded not guilty Friday to charges connected to the armed robbery of the Tisbury Rockland Trust Bank in November.

Miquel Jones, 39, of Edgartown, Omar Johnson, 32, of New Hampshire, and Romane Clayton, 21, of Jamaica, all pleaded not guilty at their federal court arraignment on Friday, held over Zoom.

Mr. Jones and Mr. Johnson were indicted last week on charges of armed bank robbery and aiding and abetting; Mr. Clayton was indicted on being an accessory after the fact to an armed bank robbery. The indictments replaced previous criminal charges filed by the government, requiring the new arraignment.

Since their arrests late last year, Mr. Jones and Mr. Johnson have remained in custody; Mr. Clayton was released with conditions, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

The men are accused of forcing their way into the bank in Tisbury on Nov. 17. According to U.S. Attorney’s Office, the men were wearing masks and carrying what appeared to be handguns.

Once inside, one of the men allegedly pointed a gun at the head of a bank employee and forced them to open the bank’s vault.

Law enforcement officials say the men made off with about $39,000 and bound bank employees with duct tape and plastic zip ties. The men allegedly then took a bank employee’s car, drove it a few miles away, and got into another vehicle to head off-Island.

The men were all eventually arrested by police. Mr. Jones was arrested by state police on-Island in November. Mr. Clayton and Mr. Johnson were arrested in Connecticut.

Friday’s arraignment was brief, lasting only about 10 minutes before Massachusetts federal judge Donald Cabell. Judge Cabell said the men’s next hearing would be before a different judge, so he did not schedule a subsequent date in court.

Armed robbery can carry a sentence of up to 25 years in prison. The charge of being an accessory after the fact can provide a sentence up to 12.5 years.
